Copenhagen early 1920s Gerda Wegener Danish artist has painted husband, Einar Wegener (Eddie Redmayne), and made to look like a woman in her painting. When painting has gained popularity, Einar began to change their appearance and turned into a woman, taking the identity of Lili Elbe. With passion for feminism and support from his wife, Einar - or Elbe - tried first operation sex change from man to woman, a decision that caused a massive transformation in their marriage when Gerda realizes that her husband is no longer a man or person whom he married her. A childhood friend of Einar, art dealer Hans Axgil appears in landscape and start a complex love triangle.
